A police pursuit in Louisiana took an unexpected turn when an alligator became part of the chase, attacking a suspected drunk driver who had fled into a swamp in an attempt to evade arrest. The unusual incident occurred on Sunday and has since drawn widespread attention after authorities released body-camera footage showing the encounter.
According to Louisiana State Police, officers initially received reports of a Toyota being driven recklessly along Interstate 10. Authorities said the vehicle struck a concrete barrier, suffered a tyre blowout, and was eventually stopped on Interstate 310. However, the driver allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot from an elevated section of the highway, disappearing into a nearby swamp to avoid being taken into custody.
Law enforcement personnel, including state troopers and deputies from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office, launched a search operation to locate the suspect. Investigators later spotted the man, identified in local media reports as 40-year-old Victor Rivas of Montz, walking near a highway. When officers attempted to approach him, he reportedly ran back into the swamp, triggering another phase of the pursuit.

Body-camera footage released by authorities captured the dramatic moment when an alligator swam rapidly toward the suspect and attacked him in the water. Officials said the reptile injured both of Rivas's arms during the encounter. Despite being bitten, the suspect allegedly continued his efforts to evade law enforcement and moved deeper into the area before officers resumed their search.
Police ultimately tracked and apprehended Rivas with the assistance of drone technology. Authorities said they waited for him to emerge from the wooded area before making the arrest. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and was later released. Rivas now faces charges including driving while impaired and resisting an officer. Additional warrants related to a hit-and-run incident and careless vehicle operation have also reportedly been obtained.
The incident quickly gained attention online, with many focusing on the unlikely role played by the alligator in the arrest. The St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office responded with humour, sharing an AI-generated image depicting an alligator dressed as a deputy receiving a “Deputy of the Year” award under the name “Al E. Gator.” In a social media post, the agency reminded the public not to drive while impaired, avoid fleeing from law enforcement, and stay out of Louisiana swamps, joking that local wildlife may be willing to assist officers in their duties.
