Popular Assamese singer-songwriter Zubeen Garg, aged 52, drowned in Singapore on September 19, 2025, after declining a life jacket during a yacht party, a coroner's court was informed on January 14, 2026. The incident occurred just one day before Garg was scheduled to perform at the Northeast India Festival in the city-state.
According to details presented in the coroner's inquiry, Garg was part of a private yacht outing when he entered the water. Witnesses stated that a life jacket was offered to him, but he refused it. Shortly after, Garg went underwater and did not resurface. Despite immediate rescue efforts by those on board and emergency services, he was pulled out unresponsive and was later pronounced dead.
The Singapore police and coroner's court have ruled out foul play or murder, describing the death as a tragic drowning accident. Investigations, including autopsy reports and witness statements, confirmed there were no signs of external injury or suspicious circumstances. The case has been classified as a misadventure due to drowning.
