Russia has extended a high-profile invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its Victory Day parade on May 9, a grand commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II.
Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko confirmed the invite, signaling Moscow’s anticipation of Modi’s presence at the Red Square spectacle. “It’s being worked out—he has an invitation,” Rudenko told Tass on Tuesday, hinting at ongoing preparations.
The annual parade, a showcase of Russia’s military might and historical pride, marks the May 9, 1945, surrender of Germany, sealed by the Act of Unconditional Surrender. This year, Russia has opened its doors to leaders of “friendly nations,” with Modi among the coveted guests.
His potential visit would follow his July 2024 trip to Moscow—his first in nearly five years—where he met President Vladimir Putin and invited him to India, an offer Putin accepted, though dates remain under wraps.
The Modi-Putin bond, fortified by regular phone calls every few months and sideline summits at global events, underscores deepening India-Russia ties. Modi’s last Russian rendezvous was in 2019 at Vladivostok’s economic forum. As May 9 nears, all eyes are on New Delhi’s RSVP, with the visit poised to spotlight a partnership that’s weathered geopolitical storms with unwavering dialogue.
