Nepal plunged into fresh turmoil on Thursday as violent clashes exploded between Gen Z activists and die-hard loyalists of ousted former prime minister KP Sharma Oli’s CPN-UML party, forcing authorities to impose an indefinite curfew and total ban on gatherings across the strategically vital Bara district in the southern Terai region.
The district administration declared prohibitory orders effective immediately, stating the curfew will remain enforced until 8 pm local time and may be extended if the situation does not stabilise. Heavy contingents of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been deployed to every major intersection, with instructions to use all necessary measures to prevent further deterioration of law and order.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes of stone-pelting, burning tyres, attempted arson on party offices, and running street battles in Kalaiya and surrounding towns, marking the most serious outbreak of violence since the September Gen Z uprising that toppled Oli’s government amid nationwide protests over corruption, unemployment, and governance failures.

Security officials confirmed that both sides mobilised in large numbers after inflammatory social media posts and counter-rallies, reigniting deep-seated political divisions barely two months after the deadly revolution claimed dozens of lives and forced the formation of a fragile new coalition government.
The renewed unrest has sent shockwaves through Kathmandu, with analysts warning that continued defiance by the Gen Z movement and aggressive mobilisation by remnants of the former ruling CPN-UML could destabilise the entire Terai belt and threaten the fragile peace as Nepal approaches crucial local elections and a constitutional amendment process demanded by the youth protesters.
