A diplomatic spat played out on social media after Iran’s consulate in Mumbai posted a sarcastic remark targeting visiting United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio as he arrived in India for a high-level official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. Rubio landed in New Delhi on Saturday for a four-day trip focused on recalibrating US–India relations, which have reportedly faced strains since mid-last year.
His visit includes meetings with Indian leadership and participation in broader strategic discussions involving trade, defence cooperation, and regional security in the Indo-Pacific. Shortly after his arrival, the Iranian consulate in Mumbai posted a pointed message on X, quoting Rubio’s India visit and using the Hindi word “sabhyata,” meaning civility or civilisation. The post read: “Thoda seekh lo yaar… ‘sabhyata ka crash course’ free mein mil jayega!”—a remark widely interpreted as a sarcastic jab at the US diplomat.
The comment quickly drew attention for its tone and timing, coming amid heightened geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Iran. The message also appeared to reference earlier controversial remarks attributed to US political leadership, which Iranian officials have previously criticised in the context of Washington–Tehran relations and broader regional policy disputes.

Rubio’s visit itself is part of ongoing diplomatic efforts between India and the United States to reinforce strategic alignment across multiple sectors, including defence cooperation, technology partnerships, and supply chain resilience. He is expected to hold talks with senior Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit.
Meanwhile, the Iranian consulate’s post has added an informal and provocative layer to an otherwise formal diplomatic visit, highlighting how social media has increasingly become a platform for geopolitical messaging and symbolic exchanges between state actors and their representatives. Officials from the US and India have not publicly responded to the Iranian remarks, and the focus of Rubio’s visit remains on strengthening bilateral engagement and advancing shared strategic priorities between Washington and New Delhi.
