Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Saturday urged India and Bangladesh to deepen bilateral cooperation and strengthen their longstanding friendship. Addressing an Independence Day celebration at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, Trivedi stressed the importance of joint efforts to advance the partnership across key sectors. Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Badhe, Indian students and prominent Bangladeshi personalities were among those present at the event.

Trivedi placed people-to-people ties at the centre of the relationship between the two countries. He noted that shared aspirations and mutual goodwill remained important foundations of the enduring friendship between India and Bangladesh. He also pointed to cooperation in areas including trade, connectivity, security and healthcare, urging both sides to work together towards shared prosperity.

The Indian envoy also referred to the shared history of the two nations' freedom struggles. He described the relationship as being rooted in mutual respect, cooperation and partnership, adding that the common history provided a strong foundation for continued engagement. Trivedi also called for the bilateral relationship to evolve in accordance with the aspirations of people in both countries while preserving the goodwill and mutual respect that underpin their ties.

Reflecting on India's Independence Day, Trivedi said the occasion was an opportunity to celebrate not only freedom but also India's democratic traditions and modern growth. He highlighted innovation, resilience and the aspirations of citizens as drivers of the country's progress. He also called for continued commitment to India's development, unity and prosperity while stressing the importance of the special relationship with Bangladesh.

As part of the Independence Day observances, officers and staff of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka participated in a Swachhata Abhiyan in the vicinity of the mission. The mission described the cleanliness activity as reflecting a shared commitment to a cleaner and greener environment. The initiative formed part of the wider celebrations marking India's 80th Independence Day.

Earlier, Bangladesh extended greetings to the people of India on the occasion and paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during India's freedom movement. The Bangladesh High Commission to India shared a multilingual Independence Day message on X under the themes of “Friendship, Harmony and Prosperity”. The messages from both sides highlighted shared history, people-to-people connections and the importance of continued cooperation between India and Bangladesh.
