Indian Ambassador to the United States Vinay Mohan Kwatra met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and former National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien in Washington on Wednesday. The meeting focused on advancing bilateral trade discussions as both countries work toward finalising key elements of a proposed trade agreement. This engagement comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen economic ties between the two nations.
The discussions are part of broader negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA). India and the US had earlier reached a broad framework for an interim deal, with talks aiming to refine terms, address tariff issues, and expand market access in various sectors. Ambassador Kwatra's meeting underscores India's commitment to pushing the process forward at the diplomatic level.
A senior Indian government official indicated that chief negotiators from both sides are scheduled to hold three-day in-person talks in Washington starting April 20. An Indian delegation led by the chief negotiator is expected to visit the US capital next week to finalise legal aspects of the agreement. This follows a joint statement earlier in the year and recent recalibrations prompted by changes in the US tariff landscape.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor had earlier described a meeting with Trade Representative Greer as highly productive, noting that the two sides had previously agreed on a trade deal framework. He expressed anticipation for welcoming the Indian delegation later in April to advance President Donald Trump's trade priorities in South and Central Asia. Both countries aim to significantly boost two-way trade, with ambitions to push bilateral commerce toward higher targets in the coming years.
The India-US trade relationship has seen renewed momentum in recent months, building on longstanding strategic and economic partnerships. Negotiations cover a range of issues including tariffs, market access for agricultural and industrial goods, services, and technology cooperation. Analysts view a successful conclusion of the deal as beneficial for supply chain resilience and economic growth on both sides, especially in the current global trade environment.
The upcoming talks and high-level meetings signal continued diplomatic engagement despite evolving US trade policies. Progress on the agreement is being closely watched by businesses and investors in both countries, with expectations that a mutually beneficial pact could open new opportunities while addressing longstanding concerns. Further updates are anticipated following the April 20 negotiations.
