India delivered a firm response to Pakistan at the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), with Indian diplomat Anupama Singh taking the floor to strongly reject allegations raised by Islamabad and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Reports suggest that Singh is an officer of the Indian Foreign Service and has built a reputation for assertive diplomacy on the global stage.

The ongoing UNHRC session, which runs from February 23 to March 31, saw India exercising its right of reply during the high-level segment on February 25. Addressing the Council, Singh said India “categorically rejects these allegations", accusing Pakistan of running “incessant propaganda", which she noted “reeks of envy” in tone and intent. Her comments were both direct and pointed, emphasising India’s stance on human rights and its commitment to regional stability.

Singh also took aim at the OIC, criticising it for functioning as an “echo chamber” for a single member state, which she implied compromises the credibility of the multilateral body. Drawing a comparison between Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan’s economic situation, Singh highlighted that the Union Territory’s development budget for 2026-27 stands at Rs 1.13 lakh crore, which is more than double the recent bailout package of 1.2 billion US dollars that Pakistan sought from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Reiterating India’s longstanding position, Singh underscored that Jammu and Kashmir “was, is, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India". She emphasised that the region’s accession to India in 1947 was “completely legal and irrevocable” under the Indian Independence Act and recognised by international law.

Her response at the council underlined India’s strategic approach to international diplomacy, balancing legal arguments with political messaging. Analysts noted that her statements were aimed not only at rebutting Pakistan’s narrative but also at reinforcing India’s development progress in Jammu and Kashmir and showcasing governance achievements in comparison to its neighbour.

During the session, Singh’s address was met with attention from diplomats across the globe, highlighting India’s growing assertiveness in multilateral forums. By presenting concrete budgetary figures and pointing to Pakistan’s financial dependence on international aid, she strengthened India’s position while challenging Pakistan’s credibility on human rights issues.
