India has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, declaring that “intermittent pauses” in hostilities are insufficient to address the region’s dire humanitarian crisis. Speaking at a UN Security Council debate on the Middle East, India’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, emphasized the urgent need for sustained peace to tackle acute shortages of food, fuel, medical services, and education.
“Humanitarian assistance must be safe, sustained, and timely. A ceasefire is essential, all hostages must be released, and dialogue remains the only path forward,” Harish stated during the debate, held under Pakistan’s July presidency. He highlighted India’s unwavering support for Palestine, noting its historic recognition of the State of Palestine as the first non-Arab nation to do so.
Harish described Gaza’s health and education crisis as “troubling,” citing WHO reports of 95% of hospitals damaged or destroyed and over 650,000 children deprived of schooling for 20 months. He expressed hope that the upcoming High-Level International Conference (July 28-30), co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, will drive concrete steps toward a two-State solution, establishing a sovereign Palestine alongside Israel.

India is actively contributing through projects worth over USD 40 million to improve Palestinian lives. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and General Assembly President Philemon Yang echoed India’s call, stressing the two-State solution as the only viable path to lasting peace, warning against alternatives that deny Palestinian rights.
India reiterated its commitment to fostering hope and peace in the region through diplomacy and tangible support.
