In response to a devastating 6.0 magnitude earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, killing over 800 people and injuring more than 2,500, India has swiftly mobilized humanitarian aid. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in a call with Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, expressed condolences and confirmed the delivery of 1,000 family tents to Kabul, with 15 tonnes of food supplies being dispatched to Kunar province.
Jaishankar assured continued support, stating, “Further relief material will be sent from India starting tomorrow. India stands by Afghanistan at this difficult time.” He also wished a speedy recovery for the injured. The Indian mission in Kabul is coordinating the distribution of aid to the affected regions, ensuring rapid response to the crisis.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed this commitment, expressing solidarity on X: “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Afghanistan. India stands ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid and relief to those affected.”
The prompt delivery of relief materials underscores India’s role as a key humanitarian partner to Afghanistan, with ongoing efforts to provide additional supplies to support recovery and rehabilitation in the quake-stricken areas.
