A three-member delegation from India’s Jal Shakti Ministry met with Madhes Province Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh on Thursday to tackle the severe drought crisis gripping Nepal’s key agricultural region. The delayed monsoon this year has left Madhes, a vital farming hub along the Indian border, reeling from insufficient rainfall, jeopardizing the livelihoods of farmers reliant on timely sowing for their crops.
Recent sporadic rains have provided partial relief, but the region continues to face significant water shortages. The Indian delegation, led by technical experts, shared critical insights on leveraging groundwater resources to alleviate the crisis, offering a lifeline to struggling farmers. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the team proposed sustainable water management strategies and committed to deploying Indian technicians for an in-depth study of groundwater availability across Madhes Province’s districts.
Chief Minister Singh expressed optimism, stating that the collaboration would bolster long-term water security and agricultural resilience. The initiative aligns with India’s broader commitment to regional cooperation, as outlined in recent bilateral agreements on water resource management. This move marks a significant step in addressing the environmental and economic challenges posed by climate variability in Madhes, with hopes of ensuring a sustainable future for its farming communities.
