India marked a significant milestone in its diplomatic presence in China with the inauguration of a spacious, ultramodern Consulate General building in Shanghai on Sunday, the first relocation and expansion in 32 years. Situated in the prestigious Dawning Centre in Changning District’s Hongqiao-Gubei business corridor, the new chancery more than doubles the previous footprint to 1,436.63 square metres and will begin full operations from December 8.

Indian Ambassador to China, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, formally inaugurated the facility in the presence of over 400 distinguished guests, including senior Shanghai municipal officials, diplomats, and members of the Indian diaspora from across eastern China. Describing 2025 as particularly symbolic with both nations celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Rawat emphasised that the world-class premises reflect the growing depth and maturity of India-China ties.

Consul General Pratik Mathur highlighted the strategic importance of the new location, surrounded by multinational corporations and diplomatic missions, as well as its proximity to the Hongqiao transportation hub. The consolidated, secure floorplate now houses consular, commercial, cultural, and administrative wings under one roof, enabling significantly enhanced service delivery to Indian nationals and Chinese partners across Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, and Shanghai.

The opening coincides with renewed momentum in bilateral engagement, including the recent launch of direct flights between Indian cities and Shanghai, which is expected to boost trade, tourism, and investment flows. Mathur noted that the expanded capacity aligns perfectly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of inclusive governance and people-centric diplomacy, transforming the Consulate into a vibrant hub for commerce, culture, and community outreach.

With its cutting-edge infrastructure and prime positioning, the new Consulate General of India in Shanghai stands poised to play a pivotal role in deepening economic partnerships and people-to-people connections between India and one of China’s most dynamic regions, heralding a new chapter in bilateral cooperation.
