Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a pivotal phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday, reaffirming India’s steadfast support for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Ukraine conflict while bolstering the India-France strategic partnership. The discussion, which underscored New Delhi’s diplomatic influence, comes amid heightened global efforts to end the war and strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.
Modi emphasized India’s consistent advocacy for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, urging an early restoration of peace and stability in the region. “Had a very good conversation with President Macron. We reviewed and positively assessed progress in bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on efforts to bring an early end to the Ukraine conflict,” Modi posted on X. He highlighted that the India-France Strategic Partnership will continue to play a crucial role in fostering global peace.
The conversation follows Macron’s participation in talks with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House last month, as well as Modi’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China, from August 31 to September 1, 2025. During the SCO Summit, Modi reiterated India’s call for halting hostilities, stating, “It is humanity’s call to resolve this conflict as soon as possible.” Zelenskyy, who spoke with Modi on August 30, 2025, noted India’s readiness to signal Russia for peace efforts, highlighting New Delhi’s growing role in global mediation.

Modi thanked Macron for accepting an invitation to the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi in February 2026, expressing eagerness to host the French President. Both leaders committed to sustained collaboration, particularly in preparation for France’s G7 presidency and India’s BRICS presidency in 2026, to promote global stability.
While the Indian readout did not mention discussions on US tariffs, the timing of the call suggests a broader strategic alignment amid global economic and geopolitical shifts. India’s consistent push for peace, coupled with its deepening ties with France, positions it as a key player in international diplomacy. As Modi and Macron continue to coordinate on pressing issues, their partnership underscores a shared vision for a stable and prosperous global order.
