Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mauritian PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam oversaw the signing of eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on Wednesday, deepening India-Mauritius relations across crime investigation, maritime security, infrastructure, trade, finance, and ocean economy.
The agreements, signed on Mauritius’ National Day, underscore a shared commitment to an “Enhanced Strategic Partnership.”
PM Modi, addressing a joint press meet, celebrated the cultural and historical bonds linking the two nations beyond the Indian Ocean. “We’ve stood together through disasters and progress, from defense to health and space,” he said, citing milestones like the Metro Express, Supreme Court building, and UPI’s introduction.
He announced India’s gift of a new parliament building, a 100-km water pipeline upgrade, and 500 million Mauritian rupees for community projects. Over the next five years, 500 Mauritian civil servants will train in India, and trade will shift to local currencies.
Maritime security remains pivotal, with India aiding a police academy and maritime information center in Mauritius. “A free, secure Indian Ocean is our priority,” Modi emphasized, pledging support for Mauritius’ economic zone via platforms like the Colombo Security Conclave.
He also highlighted AI and digital infrastructure collaboration, alongside cultural initiatives like the Char Dham Yatra for Mauritians.
PM Ramgoolam hailed Modi’s visit as a symbol of their “unique relationship,” rooted in centuries of diaspora ties and formalized in 1948. “Last evening’s community event showcased our vibrant heritage,” he said, noting India’s socio-economic aid.
Key MoUs include a Local Currency Settlement System between the Reserve Bank of India and Mauritius’ Central Bank, a credit facility from the State Bank of India for water infrastructure, and training pacts for diplomats and public officers. Security ties strengthened with agreements on white shipping and financial crime prevention, while MSME and ocean research MoUs boost economic collaboration.
Reflecting on the SAGAR vision launched a decade ago in Mauritius, Modi envisioned a broader global south partnership. These MoUs mark a milestone, cementing India and Mauritius as allies in progress and stability.
