India and Japan have taken steps to strengthen cooperation in defence technology and economic security, reinforcing the pillars of their Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Sadamasa Oue, Special Advisor to Japan’s Prime Minister, on Friday to discuss deeper collaboration in these critical areas, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
“Foreign Secretary Shri Vikram Misri met Sadamasa Oue… They had a productive exchange of views on strengthening the defence technology and economic security pillars of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X, highlighting the significance of the talks.
India-Japan relations have steadily evolved, being elevated to a ‘Global Partnership’ in 2000, a ‘Strategic and Global Partnership’ in 2006, and a ‘Special Strategic and Global Partnership’ in 2014. Defence and security cooperation is a central component of bilateral ties, and recent years have seen increasing collaboration due to shared strategic priorities, particularly around peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

The discussions follow earlier diplomatic exchanges, including a February 24 message from Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, who thanked External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for his congratulatory note on his reappointment. Motegi reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” (FOIP). Both ministers emphasized the continuity of strategic cooperation through statements shared on X.
In addition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sanae Takaichi on her February 8 victory in Japan’s House of Representatives election. Modi expressed confidence that Takaichi’s leadership would further strengthen India-Japan ties, emphasizing the partnership’s role in promoting global peace, stability, and prosperity. Takaichi responded by reaffirming her commitment to advancing the Special Strategic and Global Partnership and cooperating on FOIP initiatives.
These diplomatic and strategic engagements underscore the growing significance of India-Japan cooperation in defence, economic security, and regional stability. As both nations navigate complex geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific, their partnership is increasingly seen as a cornerstone of regional security and a platform for shared strategic objectives.
