Italy’s envoy for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), Francesco Talo’, emphasized the project’s critical role in addressing global volatility during an exclusive PTI Videos interview at the Italian Embassy. Launched with optimism at the 2023 G20 Summit in Delhi, IMEC aims to create extensive road, rail, and shipping networks connecting India, Saudi Arabia, the US, and Europe, including EU signatories Italy, France, and Germany.
Talo’ highlighted the project’s challenges following the October 2023 Israel-Hamas attack, which stalled progress amid regional conflicts, including a recent Israel-Iran confrontation. “In times of uncertainty, we need projects like IMEC to diversify routes and reduce dependency,” he said, advocating for a shift from discussions to concrete action.
Visiting India for a meeting with IMEC partners, Talo’ engaged with India’s National Security Council and external affairs ministry to strengthen collaboration. He positioned IMEC as distinct from China’s Belt and Road Initiative, emphasizing its focus on shared prosperity for partner nations. Italy, which withdrew from BRI in 2023, sees IMEC as a strategic opportunity, with Trieste proposed as a key hub in the “Indo-Mediterranean” region.

Talo’ underscored the need for collective growth to ensure security and peace, noting the Gulf countries’ role in innovation. Aligned with the EU’s Global Gateway initiative, IMEC promises economic growth and stability, benefiting even conflict-prone regions.
