A devastating accident claimed five lives late Friday when an SUV veered off the road and plunged 600 feet into a gorge in Ramban district’s Ukhral Pogal Paristan area, leaving one survivor clinging to life. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the region, with authorities scrambling to support the victims’ families.
Rescuers reached the site near Senabathi to find 20-year-old Tauqeer Ahmad dead on impact. Five other passengers were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to medical facilities, but three—Mohd Rafiq (40), Abdul Latief (40), and Ajaz Ahmad (20)—succumbed to their injuries en route. Shakeel Ahmad (24) passed away Saturday morning in a Srinagar hospital, while Yawar Ahmad (25) remains in critical condition.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Union Minister Jitendra Singh expressed deep sorrow, pledging full support to the affected families. Ramban Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Alyas Khan announced ₹1 lakh for the kin of each deceased victim and ₹25,000 for the injured survivor, stating on X, “All possible support is being extended to the affected families.”
