BJP MP and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Thursday praised the Modi government for the extensive financial assistance and infrastructure projects extended to Himachal Pradesh, calling it a record period of development for the state. He emphasised that since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, Himachal Pradesh has received ₹76,799 crore in central aid and project support.
Addressing the media, Thakur contrasted this with the previous UPA regime, which he said had stripped the state of its special category status. “Under PM Modi, Himachal Pradesh’s special category status has been restored, enabling the Centre to bear 90 per cent of project costs while the state contributes only 10 per cent,” he said.
Thakur highlighted several key infrastructure initiatives, including ongoing railway projects worth over ₹13,000 crore that aim to improve connectivity and spur economic growth. He accused the Congress of misleading the public with false claims about the Centre’s support to the state.

The BJP leader also pointed to Covid-era assistance, noting that the Modi government provided ₹8,309 crore to Himachal Pradesh during the pandemic, compared with negligible support from the UPA. Investments in health and industry were also significant, with ₹720 crore allocated for medical colleges, ₹1,000 crore for a bulk drug park in Una, and over ₹300 crore for a medical device park in Rajgarh.
Addressing concerns over the revenue deficit grant, Thakur clarified that its temporary suspension affected 17 states, not just Himachal Pradesh, and dismissed allegations of discrimination as baseless. He underlined that the Centre has consistently ensured sufficient funds for the state’s development initiatives.
Launching a critique of the state government, Thakur accused it of over-borrowing and failing to bolster its revenue, which he said has worsened Himachal Pradesh’s financial health. He warned that the state must adopt more disciplined fiscal measures to complement the Centre’s robust support.
