A fugitive wanted in connection with a murder case in the Indian state of Haryana was deported from the United States and taken into custody by Indian authorities on February 10, 2026, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The individual, identified as Sombir Motta, had been sought by the Haryana Police for offences related to murder and the use of firearms. He was deported back to India following an extensive international law enforcement operation coordinated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in cooperation with India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the National Central Bureau (NCB) in Washington.
Authorities said Motta was transferred from the United States and landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, where Haryana Police officers immediately took him into custody. The deportation followed nearly a year after law enforcement agencies successfully obtained a Red Notice against him through INTERPOL on February 11, 2025, a global alert that assists in locating and detaining wanted fugitives.

The CBI, acting as India’s nodal INTERPOL agency, facilitated the international collaboration required to track Motta’s location in the US and initiate his removal under US immigration procedures. Red Notices are circulated among law enforcement agencies worldwide to alert them to fugitives’ movements and support their eventual detention.
Upon his arrival in India, Motta was formally handed over to Haryana Police, who are now responsible for further investigation and legal processes in connection with the murder case and associated charges he faces. Officials have not yet disclosed specific details of the victim or the circumstances of the alleged crime.
The successful deportation underscores ongoing cooperation between Indian law enforcement and international partners to repatriate fugitives abroad. India has increasingly used INTERPOL channels to bring wanted individuals home to face justice, with more than 150 fugitives reportedly returned in recent years under similar operations.
