Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka commenced a three-day official visit to India on August 24, 2025, marking his first trip to the country as Fiji’s leader. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations, with a focus on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, and maritime security.
Rabuka, accompanied by a high-level delegation including Health Minister Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu and senior officials, was warmly received at the airport in New Delhi by Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar.
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host Rabuka for comprehensive discussions, followed by a ceremonial lunch in his honor. “The visit will further deepen India-Fiji partnership across diverse sectors,” stated External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X.
India and Fiji share deep historical and cultural ties, dating back to 1879 when Indian laborers arrived in Fiji under the British indenture system, fostering enduring people-to-people connections.
The visit follows President Droupadi Murmu’s trip to Fiji in 2024, underscoring the commitment of both nations to bolster their longstanding relationship. Fiji holds strategic importance for India in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in maritime security.
An Indian government statement highlighted that Rabuka’s visit “reaffirms the continued commitment of both countries to further strengthen the bilateral relationship across all sectors and deepen our close people-to-people ties.” This milestone visit is poised to elevate India-Fiji collaboration, fostering mutual growth and regional stability.
