The fashion world mourned the loss of Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian designer who transformed global style with his signature unstructured looks, as confirmed by his fashion house. Armani, aged 91, passed away peacefully at his home in Milan, surrounded by loved ones, according to the Armani Group. Known as “Re Giorgio” or King Giorgio, he built a multibillion-dollar empire synonymous with modern Italian elegance, generating €2.3 billion ($2.7 billion) annually.
Armani, who founded Giorgio Armani S.p.A. in 1975 with partner Sergio Galeotti, revolutionized fashion with relaxed tailoring, notably the “power suit” that empowered women in the workplace and redefined menswear. His influence extended beyond fashion into cosmetics, home furnishings, and hospitality, including ownership of the EA7 Emporio Armani Milan basketball team and luxury hotels. Armani’s absence from Milan Fashion Week in June 2025, due to an undisclosed age-related illness, marked a rare miss in his 50-year career.
He was set to celebrate his brand’s 50th anniversary at Milan Fashion Week later in September 2025. The Armani Group announced a funeral chamber in Milan on September 6 and 7, with a private ceremony to follow, honoring a visionary whose timeless designs dressed stars like Cate Blanchett and Richard Gere.
