A tragic incident in Guwahati claimed the life of a woman who fell into an open roadside drain amid heavy rainfall and severe waterlogging. The victim, identified as Payel Nath, reportedly slipped on a flooded footpath on Sunday night and was swept into the uncovered drain, which had become nearly invisible due to accumulated rainwater. The incident triggered panic among local residents, who initially struggled to locate her after she went missing.
Authorities said the city had been experiencing continuous rainfall, leading to widespread flooding in several low-lying areas. The uncovered drain, situated along a pedestrian path, turned into a hazardous trap under such conditions, raising serious concerns about civic safety and infrastructure maintenance. Local residents have alleged that inadequate drainage systems and the absence of proper safety covers contributed to the fatal accident.
Emergency response teams were alerted soon after the incident, and search operations were launched to trace the woman. Her death has once again highlighted the risks posed by open drains and poor urban planning, especially during monsoon conditions when heavy rainfall can quickly overwhelm drainage networks and obscure potential dangers.
