Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has written to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, requesting urgent intervention in a complaint alleging gender discrimination in the promotion of teachers under the Directorate of Education (DoE). The letter, sent on Thursday, forwards a representation received on January 26 from UDITA Society for Welfare of Teachers, which highlights serious anomalies in the existing seniority and promotion policies.
According to the representation, the DoE maintains separate seniority lists for male and female teachers. This practice reportedly results in significant discrimination against female educators, who often wait much longer for promotions compared to their male counterparts who advance more quickly. The teachers’ group claims this gender-based segregation violates principles of equality and fairness in career progression within government schools.
Speaker Gupta has specifically asked the LG to direct the concerned authorities to consolidate these separate gender-based seniority lists at the earliest opportunity and to halt any further promotions until the issue is resolved. He emphasized the need for prompt redressal to address the grievances raised by the affected teachers. Notably, the matter is already sub judice, pending before the Delhi High Court, which adds legal complexity to the administrative intervention being sought.

No immediate response has come from the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education regarding the allegations or the Speaker’s request. The development has once again spotlighted concerns about workplace equity in the public education sector, where gender parity in promotions remains a persistent issue for many female employees.
