Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia has dismissed exit poll predictions in the ongoing Assam Assembly elections, urging voters not to trust them and expressing confidence that the Congress-led ‘Mahajot’ alliance will emerge victorious.
Saikia alleged that many people were reluctant to openly express their political preferences due to fear and intimidation, claiming that “people are silent due to BJP goons.” His remarks come at a time when multiple exit polls have projected a comfortable lead for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance in the state.
The opposition leader maintained that ground realities differ significantly from survey projections, arguing that silent voters would deliver a surprise verdict when votes are counted. He expressed confidence that the Indian National Congress-led alliance, known as the Mahajot, has garnered sufficient support to challenge the incumbent government.

Exit polls released after the completion of voting have largely suggested that the BJP-led NDA could retain power in Assam, with several agencies predicting a clear majority. These projections have set the stage for a high-stakes counting day, with political parties offering sharply contrasting interpretations of the electorate’s mood.
The Assam Assembly elections, held for all 126 seats, witnessed significant voter turnout and intense campaigning by both the ruling alliance and the opposition bloc. The contest has been closely watched as a test of the BJP’s continued dominance in the Northeast and the Congress-led alliance’s attempt at a comeback.
Saikia’s remarks reflect the broader political narrative emerging ahead of the results, with opposition leaders across states questioning the credibility of exit polls while ruling parties highlight them as indicators of electoral momentum. The final outcome will be determined when votes are counted, bringing clarity to one of the region’s most closely followed political contests.
