At least 27 people were killed and 42 others injured after an overnight Russian air attack struck Ukraine's Kyiv region, regional governor Tymur Tkachenko said on Saturday. The attack caused widespread damage in the Bucha district, where more than 380 people were being evacuated from areas hit by the strikes. Tkachenko, who also heads the regional military administration, said at least 50 residential buildings were damaged in the attack. The strikes also triggered a large fire that spread to several homes and a restaurant, adding to the destruction in the affected area. Emergency services and local authorities were engaged in evacuation and response efforts as residents were moved away from locations damaged by the overnight attack.

The reported casualties make the strike one of the deadlier recent attacks on the Kyiv region, with the full extent of the damage still being assessed. Tkachenko said the evacuation operation was focused on the strike-hit area in Bucha district. More than 380 people were being moved to safer locations as authorities responded to the damage. Residential buildings were among the structures affected, raising concerns over the safety of civilians living in the area. Fires and debris from the strikes further complicated the emergency response as rescue teams worked at the affected sites.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a warehouse in the village of Myla was among the locations hit during the attack.  According to Zelensky, the strike was followed by an explosion at the site. He also said Ukrainian authorities had launched criminal proceedings over alleged official negligence connected to the storage of ammunition at the warehouse. Zelensky said ammunition should not have been stored close to residential areas and suggested that the circumstances surrounding the warehouse would be investigated. “There are regulations in place – ammunition cannot be stored near homes or other residential areas,” he said.

The Ukrainian president's comments indicate that authorities are examining not only the circumstances of the Russian strike but also whether safety rules governing the storage of ammunition were breached. The latest attack comes amid Russia's continuing air campaign against Ukraine, with civilian areas and critical infrastructure repeatedly affected during the conflict.
