The 14th Dalai Lama formally received a Grammy Award at his residence in McLeodganj on Wednesday for his spoken-word album Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The recognition marks a notable cultural milestone for the Tibetan spiritual leader, whose reflections on compassion, peace, and mindfulness were brought to a global audience through the award-winning production.
Tenzin Gyatso (14th Dalai Lama) was honoured for the album, which blends his teachings with original musical compositions by sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan and his sons Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash. The project was produced by Grammy-winning producer Kabir Sehgal and features contributions from international artists, creating a cross-cultural collaboration rooted in themes of peace and human unity.
The album Meditations includes spoken reflections by the Dalai Lama on topics such as compassion, environmental responsibility, and the shared nature of humanity. Tracks like “Water” highlight his observations on climate change and the importance of protecting natural resources, while “Peace” emphasizes compassion as a foundation for individual and societal well-being. The production combines narration with Indian classical music to create a meditative listening experience.

At the Grammy Awards held earlier in February, the album won in the Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording category. Musician Rufus Wainwright had accepted the award on behalf of the Dalai Lama at the ceremony. The recognition placed the project alongside other nominees including works by Trevor Noah, Ketanji Brown Jackson, and Elvis-related storytelling productions.
During the presentation at McLeodganj, Amjad Ali Khan and his sons formally handed over the award, describing the collaboration as a deeply meaningful artistic and spiritual experience. They said the project reflected a shared commitment to spreading messages of compassion and peace through music and dialogue. Producer Kabir Sehgal also played a key role in bringing together the international team behind the album.
Following the recognition, the Dalai Lama expressed gratitude, stating that he viewed the award not as a personal achievement but as an acknowledgment of shared human values. He emphasized that compassion, environmental care, and understanding unity among people remain essential for global harmony. The award adds to his long list of international honours, including the Nobel Peace Prize and the US Congressional Gold Medal.
