Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Monday criticised the use of demeaning language against women amid a political controversy surrounding Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin's remarks involving actor Trisha. Without naming Udhayanidhi, Vijay said freedom of speech should not be used to make offensive comments about people or women. He said society was watching politicians who made statements with double meanings and stressed that women should be treated with dignity. Vijay also warned that the law would take action if women were insulted.

The controversy stems from remarks made by Udhayanidhi during a Cauvery-related protest in Thanjavur. Supporters reportedly chanted Trisha's name while he was speaking, after which he made a comment that critics interpreted as a vulgar reference to the actor. Udhayanidhi later denied making an objectionable statement and said his remarks were connected to the Cauvery issue. The episode triggered criticism and eventually led to police action against the DMK leader.

Udhayanidhi was arrested at his Chennai residence and taken to Thanjavur for questioning before being released on station bail. He subsequently accused the Vijay-led government of political vendetta and maintained that he had no intention of insulting women. Vijay's latest comments appeared to address the broader issue of political leaders making personal or offensive remarks while claiming protection under freedom of speech. He also referred to the insults faced by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in the Assembly.

Vijay also spoke about the importance of maintaining law and order in the state, saying effective policing was essential for development. He said the police should not be viewed only as a force responsible for making arrests but as an institution that helps maintain public safety. Vijay further stated that political leaders and government officials should not interfere in police matters. He said police should remain a friend to those who follow the law and take action against those who violate it.

The Chief Minister highlighted crimes against women and children as a major concern and said police had been instructed to respond quickly to such cases. He also identified cybercrime as an increasing challenge, particularly as people of different age groups increasingly use digital technology. Vijay said greater awareness was needed to encourage responsible use of technology. He also linked social problems and drug-related issues to some cases involving young people and said prevention should remain an important part of the government's approach.
