The United States has announced that it carried out what it described as "self-defense strikes” against Iranian radar and drone command facilities over the weekend, marking another escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at extending a ceasefire and reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The strikes targeted sites on Goruk and Qeshm Island in southern Iran, according to the US military.
In a statement posted on social media, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation was conducted in response to the reported downing of an American MQ-1 Predator drone that was flying over international waters. CENTCOM stated that US fighter aircraft struck Iranian air defense systems, a drone command-and-control facility, and two one-way attack drones. The military added that no American personnel were injured during the operation.
The latest military action follows a series of confrontations between the two countries in recent weeks. Last week, Iran reportedly launched attacks against a US military facility after American forces targeted what US officials described as an Iranian drone operation near the Strait of Hormuz. The repeated exchanges have raised concerns about the risk of a broader regional conflict at a time when both sides are also engaged in indirect diplomatic negotiations.

Iran responded to the latest strikes by accusing the United States of aggression. According to reports citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iranian forces targeted an airbase allegedly linked to the attack on a communications tower on Sirik Island in Hormozgan Province. Iranian officials claimed the retaliatory operation successfully struck its intended targets, although specific details regarding the location of the airbase were not disclosed.
Meanwhile, regional security concerns intensified after Kuwait reported that its air defense systems intercepted incoming drones and missiles early Monday. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, analysts suggested that Iran or Iran-backed militias operating in Iraq could have been involved, given the pattern of attacks seen during the ongoing conflict. The incident further highlighted the fragile security environment across the Gulf region.
Despite the military escalation, diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran continue. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that both sides remain engaged in discussions aimed at reaching an agreement to end hostilities. Reports from US media indicate that President Donald Trump is seeking tougher conditions in any final arrangement. As negotiations proceed, the latest strikes underscore the delicate balance between diplomacy and military confrontation in one of the world’s most strategically significant regions.
