US immigration officials have arrested British far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos in New Orleans after authorities accused him of overstaying his legal permission to remain in the United States. The Department of Homeland Security said Yiannopoulos was taken into custody on Thursday at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. The arrest comes as US immigration authorities continue enforcing removal orders against foreign nationals who violate immigration requirements. According to a DHS spokesperson, Yiannopoulos originally entered the United States legally in May 2019 through New York City. However, authorities said he subsequently overstayed his permitted period of stay.
An immigration judge issued a final order of removal on July 22 after Yiannopoulos failed to appear for an immigration hearing, the spokesperson said in an email. “He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation's laws,” the DHS spokesperson said. The statement did not provide further details about when authorities began efforts to locate Yiannopoulos or whether he had previously been notified about the removal proceedings. His arrest at the New Orleans airport brought the immigration case into the spotlight because of his high-profile public profile and political commentary.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) online detainee locator did not identify the facility where Yiannopoulos was being held. Instead, the locator directed family members and legal representatives to an ICE office in Alexandria, Louisiana, which serves as a deportation hub for international flights. It was not immediately clear whether Yiannopoulos had obtained legal representation to challenge or otherwise address the removal order. Yiannopoulos is a British national who became widely known in the United States through his provocative political commentary and association with conservative and far-right causes. He has frequently made controversial statements criticising feminism, Islam and immigrants, contributing to his reputation as a polarising public figure.

His activities have also led to repeated disputes and controversies surrounding his appearances and public statements. His most recent professional work has involved the rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. Ye was scheduled to perform in New Orleans on Friday evening, adding another connection between Yiannopoulos' arrest and the city's entertainment schedule. It was not immediately clear whether Yiannopoulos' detention would affect any professional involvement with Ye or his planned activities surrounding the performance. Representatives for Yiannopoulos did not respond to a request for comment on the arrest and immigration proceedings.
It was also unclear whether he had an attorney representing him at the time of his detention. The DHS did not immediately provide additional information about the next steps in the removal process. The arrest illustrates the immigration consequences facing foreign nationals who remain in the United States beyond the terms of their authorised stay. In Yiannopoulos' case, DHS said the immigration judge's final removal order followed his failure to attend the scheduled hearing.
