Communal tensions have escalated in Nepal's southern plains, particularly in Birgunj town of Parsa district near the Indian border, following the vandalism of a mosque. The unrest originated from a controversial TikTok video allegedly containing derogatory remarks against Hindu deities, posted by two individuals in Dhanusha district's Kamala Municipality. Locals detained the accused and handed them over to police, but the incident quickly spiraled.
In retaliation, unidentified individuals vandalised a mosque in Sakhuwa Maran area, reportedly burning a copy of the Quran, intensifying outrage. Protests erupted in Birgunj, with demonstrators burning tyres, chanting slogans, and clashing with security forces. The demonstrations turned violent, involving stone-pelting at police and damage to a local police station, prompting authorities to fire tear gas shells to restore order.
Nepal's Parsa District Administration imposed and extended a curfew in key areas of Birgunj Metropolitan City to prevent further strife. Prohibitory orders banned gatherings, processions, and demonstrations, with the curfew lasting until at least early Tuesday morning amid ongoing monitoring by security agencies. Several arrests have been made in connection with the video and vandalism.

In response to the deteriorating situation, Indian forces, including the Sashastra Seema Bal, have sealed the India-Nepal border, halting ordinary cross-border movement except for emergencies. Enhanced patrolling and checks are in place at key points like the Maitri Bridge, with dog squads deployed for vigilance.
Many Indian migrant workers in Birgunj have begun returning home due to widespread shop closures and market shutdowns. One worker stated there was little purpose in remaining until normalcy returns, highlighting the disruption caused by the tensions in this vital cross-border commercial hub.
