A quiet evening in northeastern Virginia turned deadly on Tuesday when a mass shooting claimed three lives and left three others injured in Spotsylvania County.
The incident, which unfolded around 5:30 pm at a townhouse complex near Fredericksburg—approximately 65 miles southwest of Washington—has left the community reeling and authorities scrambling to apprehend those responsible.
Major Elizabeth Scott, spokesperson for the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office, confirmed that emergency calls flooded 911 as gunfire erupted. Responding deputies discovered six victims outside the complex, three of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. The three survivors, all suffering from gunshot wounds, were rushed to nearby hospitals, though their conditions remain undisclosed. Details about the victims’ identities or ages have yet to be released.
“This is an active and fluid situation,” Scott said during an evening press conference. “We have dozens upon dozens of officers out there, actively looking for suspects and preserving the crime scene. We will be here all night until we find them.” Authorities suspect the attack may involve multiple shooters, but no arrests have been made, and the motive remains unclear.
In the wake of the violence, officials have urged residents to steer clear of the area and those nearby to remain indoors as the investigation unfolds. Witnesses are encouraged to submit any video evidence that could aid in identifying the perpetrators.
The ripple effects of the tragedy prompted Fredericksburg City Public Schools to delay Wednesday’s opening by two hours. “In light of the profound impact this incident has had on our school community, this delay will allow us to prepare our staff and buildings to provide the care and support our students may need,” the district stated.
As the manhunt continues, this tight-knit community braces for answers amid an unfolding tragedy.
