A tragic road accident in Nepal’s Lumbini province claimed the lives of two children and injured more than 20 others on Monday when a minibus crashed and plummeted down a slope in Arghakhanchi district. The vehicle, travelling from Butwal to Purkotdaha, reportedly suffered brake failure on a steep turn, leading to the fatal incident, according to local police cited by The Kathmandu Post.
The minibus, designed to carry 16 passengers, was overcrowded with 26 occupants at the time of the crash. Among the victims were a 10-year-old and a 13-year-old who perished in the accident. The Kathmandu Post reported 20 injuries, while My Republica, citing District Police Office Chief Diwas GC, noted 24 injuries, with four individuals in critical condition. The injured were promptly taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Inspector Jhalak Prasad Sharma of the District Police Office attributed the accident to a combination of brake failure and overcrowding, which likely exacerbated the driver’s inability to navigate the treacherous terrain. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the precise circumstances and assess whether negligence or mechanical issues contributed to the tragedy.

This incident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety in Nepal, where challenging topography, ageing vehicles, and lax enforcement of transport regulations frequently lead to accidents. The government has yet to comment on specific measures to address such issues, but the accident highlights the urgent need for stricter safety standards and vehicle maintenance protocols to prevent future loss of life.
