A United Airlines Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating as Flight UA108, faced a harrowing mid-air crisis on July 25 when its left engine failed shortly after takeoff from Washington Dulles Airport. Bound for Munich, the aircraft, climbing to 5,000 feet, prompted the crew to declare a “MAYDAY” emergency, alerting air traffic controllers (ATC) to the critical situation.
The pilots, in coordination with ATC, entered a holding pattern northwest of Washington for 2 hours and 38 minutes, safely dumping fuel to reduce the plane’s weight for landing, according to FlightAware data. Maintaining 6,000 feet to avoid other air traffic, the crew executed a controlled fuel dump before requesting an Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach to land on Runway 19 Centre at Dulles. The aircraft, unable to taxi due to the disabled engine, was towed off the runway and remains grounded for inspection.
No injuries were reported, and United Airlines, alongside aviation authorities, is investigating the engine malfunction to determine the cause and ensure future safety.
