Australian police have charged a 46-year-old man for allegedly falsely claiming that he was injured in the deadly Bondi Beach shooting in an attempt to obtain financial compensation. The man was arrested following an investigation into statements he allegedly made about being a victim of the mass shooting. According to New South Wales Police, detectives identified the man after examining claims that he had sustained injuries during the attack and subsequently sought compensation.
Police allege that the man made a false statement claiming he was injured in the shooting and later submitted fraudulent compensation claims. He was arrested at Parramatta Police Station on Tuesday and charged with publishing false or misleading material to obtain an advantage. The case is being investigated as an alleged attempt to misuse compensation arrangements established in the aftermath of the deadly attack.
The Bondi Beach shooting occurred on December 14, 2025, during a Jewish festival celebrating Hanukkah in Sydney. A father-and-son duo allegedly carried out the gun attack, killing 15 people and injuring dozens of others. The incident shocked Australia and prompted investigations into the attack, the alleged perpetrators and the circumstances surrounding the violence at one of Sydney's best-known beaches.

The accused man was granted conditional bail following his arrest and is scheduled to appear before Parramatta Local Court on November 18. Police have not publicly established his guilt, and the allegations will be subject to legal proceedings. The charges relate to the alleged false statements and compensation claims rather than direct involvement in the shooting itself.
The shooting suspects also remain central to separate criminal proceedings. Sajid Akram, 50, one of the alleged gunmen, was shot and killed by police during the attack. His son, Naveed Akram, an Australian-born citizen, remains in custody facing 78 charges, including terrorism offences and 15 counts of murder. He has not yet entered a plea, and a committal hearing has been scheduled for February 24, 2027.
The latest case highlights the legal scrutiny surrounding claims made in the aftermath of the Bondi Beach tragedy. Authorities are investigating allegations of fraudulent compensation claims separately from the criminal proceedings against the surviving shooting suspect. The outcome of the case against the 46-year-old man will depend on the evidence presented in court and the legal process that follows.
