A 42-year-old migrant worker from Telangana’s Jagtial district was killed in a Russian missile strike in Ukraine, while another man from the state was injured in the attack. The deceased has been identified as Vavilala Sudarshan Goud, a resident of Husnabad village, who had travelled to Ukraine around four months ago in search of employment.
Goud had gone to Ukraine with a relative and found work in the construction sector. He was killed in Odesa while leaving his accommodation after an air-raid warning was issued. Another Telangana resident, 35-year-old Ganesh Kalleda, was injured in the Russian strikes and is receiving medical attention.
The Indian Embassy in Ukraine confirmed the death and offered assistance to Goud’s family. The embassy also said it was coordinating with his company and Ukrainian authorities to facilitate the early repatriation of his mortal remains. Telangana MLA Dr Sanjay Kumar also expressed condolences and assured the bereaved family of support during the difficult period.

The incident occurred amid a major wave of Russian drone and missile attacks across Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on September 1 that at least 12 people had been killed in the latest attacks, including an Indian citizen, while dozens of others were injured. Several cities were targeted, with residential and civilian infrastructure also reported damaged.
Zelensky noted that guided aerial bomb and drone attacks had continued against Odesa and the surrounding region since Monday evening. He expressed condolences to those who lost family members and friends and alleged that the strikes were aimed at causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The death of Goud has renewed concerns over the safety of Indians travelling to conflict-affected regions for employment. The Indian Embassy has remained in contact with the family and relevant authorities as arrangements are made to bring his remains back to India.
