A 30-member cross-party delegation from Myanmar’s Parliament is visiting India from September 1 to 8 for a capacity-building programme organised by the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE), the training and research wing of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
The delegation comprises MPs from six national and nine ethnic parties, representing 15 political parties. The Indian Embassy in Myanmar highlighted the diverse composition of the group, which includes young and first-time lawmakers as well as representatives from ethnic parties from areas along Myanmar’s borders with India, China and Thailand.
Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Abhay Thakur welcomed the delegation ahead of its departure and highlighted the importance of the representative composition. The programme will include capacity-building activities by Lok Sabha PRIDE as well as friendly meetings aimed at strengthening parliamentary engagement between the two countries.

The visit comes during the first year of Myanmar’s newly convened Parliament following the General Elections held in December 2025 and January 2026. Thakur noted that the establishment of new parliamentary institutions marked an important stage in Myanmar’s political evolution and highlighted the longstanding close relations between India and Myanmar.
The delegation’s visit also follows Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing’s official visit to India earlier this year, his first foreign visit after assuming office. During that visit, the two countries reviewed cooperation in areas including political exchanges, trade, investment, defence, culture, education and development assistance.
Bilateral discussions also covered key connectivity projects, including the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Corridor and the Kalewa-Yagyi section of the India-Myanmar Trilateral Highway. Border trade, border management and security were also among the areas highlighted as part of efforts to further strengthen multifaceted India-Myanmar cooperation.
