Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday defended his plan to expand military operations in Gaza, saying Israel “has no choice but to finish the job and complete the defeat of Hamas,” even as 26 Palestinians were killed while seeking humanitarian aid in the war-ravaged territory.
In a press conference with foreign media in Jerusalem, Netanyahu claimed Israel’s aim is “not to occupy Gaza, but to free Gaza.” He emphasized the goals of the next phase: demilitarizing the strip, maintaining Israeli military control, and establishing a non-Israeli civilian administration.
Amid rising international outrage, Netanyahu dismissed what he called a “global campaign of lies” and insisted a “fairly short timetable” is in place for the operation. He also announced plans to allow more foreign journalists into Gaza — a notable shift amid longstanding restrictions.

Meanwhile, tragedy unfolded across Gaza as hospitals confirmed at least 26 Palestinians were killed while seeking food and aid near convoy routes and distribution points. The violence sparked renewed criticism of Israeli military conduct and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, which has left over 100 children dead from hunger-related causes.
In Israel, backlash is growing. Families of hostages held in Gaza are calling for a nationwide general strike next week, warning that deeper military incursions could endanger the remaining 50 captives. Tens of thousands rallied in Tel Aviv Saturday night in one of the largest anti-government protests in months.
As the UN Security Council convenes for an emergency session on Israel’s plans to seize Gaza City, Netanyahu's resolve has drawn both praise from hardliners and condemnation from human rights groups and global leaders.
With 61,400 Palestinians reported killed since the war began — nearly half of them women and children — the international community is watching Israel's next move with urgent concern.
