The Telangana government has announced the reintroduction of the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme in all government schools starting from the 2026–27 academic year, officials said on Thursday. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed that every student will receive a nutritious breakfast along with milk, with procurement to be undertaken through Vijaya Dairy.
Speaking at a high-level education policy review, the Chief Minister emphasised the use of technology-based monitoring systems to track calorie intake and ensure that nutritional standards are maintained. The scheme, originally launched by the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government led by K Chandrashekar Rao, was first introduced on October 6, 2023, and rolled out statewide on October 24 during the Dasara festival period.
The initiative aims to provide free, nutritious breakfast to students from Classes 1 to 10 across nearly 43,000 government schools, benefiting an estimated 20 to 23 lakh students. Menus under the programme previously included idli with sambar, pongal, and upma, with two rotating options offered daily. The scheme had an annual budget allocation of around ₹400 crore before it was discontinued following the change in government in December 2023, prompting criticism from BRS leaders.

At the review meeting, Chief Minister Reddy also announced that comprehensive school kits will be distributed to all students from the upcoming academic year, supplementing the existing provision of uniforms and textbooks. The proposed kits will include schoolbags, pens, pencils, sharpeners, colour pencils, geometry boxes, dictionaries, shoes, and socks.
Officials have been instructed to ensure the necessary budgetary allocations for both the Breakfast Scheme and the school kits programme. The government highlighted that these initiatives are part of a broader effort to improve child nutrition, learning outcomes, and access to essential educational resources across Telangana’s government schools.
By reviving the scheme with updated monitoring and nutritional standards, the state aims to support students’ health and well-being while ensuring equitable access to education, reflecting a renewed focus on student-centric policies in Telangana.
