The stage is set for a high-stakes political battle in Assam as the 2026 Assembly election results are poised to determine whether the Bharatiya Janata Party can secure a third consecutive term or if the Indian National Congress can stage a comeback after a decade out of power.
Polling for all 126 seats was held on April 9, with results scheduled to be declared on May 4. The BJP, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, entered the contest aiming for a hat-trick after forming the government in both 2016 and 2021. Exit polls and party leaders have projected confidence within the ruling alliance, with many surveys indicating a potential return to power for the BJP-led NDA.
On the other side, the Congress, led in the state by Gaurav Gogoi, is seeking to reclaim its lost ground. Once the dominant political force in Assam, the party has struggled with internal defections and organisational setbacks over the past decade. Despite this, Congress leaders have dismissed exit poll predictions and urged cadre to remain vigilant ahead of counting, signalling a tightly contested outcome.

The election has seen intense campaigning from both sides, with issues such as development, identity politics, flood management, and land rights dominating voter discourse. A high voter turnout of over 85% reflects strong public engagement, with several constituencies emerging as crucial battlegrounds that could swing the final result.
While the BJP has focused on governance, welfare schemes, and leadership stability under Sarma, the Congress has attempted to rebuild its base by highlighting local issues and projecting a renewed leadership structure. The broader contest also includes regional dynamics and smaller parties that could influence vote shares in key constituencies.
As counting day approaches, Assam stands at a political crossroads. Whether the BJP consolidates its dominance with a third straight victory or the Congress manages a resurgence will not only shape the state’s governance for the next five years but also carry wider implications for nation
