United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has compared the founding vision of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to the 1969 Moon landing, calling the organisation’s growth a reflection of what he described as America’s culture of bold ambition and innovation. Speaking at a pre-event gathering ahead of UFC Freedom 250, Rubio said the UFC represents the same spirit of achievement that defined the United States’ Apollo 11 mission.
He referred to President John F. Kennedy’s goal of sending a man to the Moon and bringing him back safely, describing it as an example of national determination that seemed impossible at the time but was ultimately achieved. Rubio said the UFC embodies a similar ethos, calling it a “historic” enterprise that has redefined global combat sports. He also described the organisation as the “United Nations of Fighting,” highlighting its international roster of athletes and its global audience reach.
The remarks come ahead of the UFC Freedom 250 event scheduled to take place on Sunday at the White House South Lawn, an unusual venue for a professional mixed martial arts card. The octagon is being constructed on the South Lawn as part of a larger series of celebrations tied to America’s 250th anniversary and coinciding with former President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. The event is expected to feature an elaborate setup, including temporary seating structures, large viewing screens, and additional spectator areas at nearby public spaces.

Organisers have said the production aims to accommodate large crowds and create a festival-like atmosphere around the fights. UFC chief executive Dana White has stated that the organisation is spending approximately $30 million to stage the event, describing it as a patriotic celebration rather than a political statement. He said the initiative is intended to mark America’s 250th year with a large-scale public sporting spectacle.
White also noted that the UFC plans to distribute tens of thousands of free tickets and broadcast the fights on large outdoor screens to maximise public access. He defended the event’s scale and cost, arguing that it reflects national pride and the growing mainstream popularity of mixed martial arts. The event has drawn significant attention due to its location at the White House and its integration into national anniversary celebrations, with both supporters and critics closely watching how the spectacle unfolds over the weekend.
