Hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the Meitei community marched through Imphal on Monday, pressing for the swift resettlement of those uprooted by ongoing ethnic violence. The demonstrators gathered near Lok Bhavan, accompanied by representatives from the Meitei Organisation Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI). Protesters chanted slogans calling for the immediate rehabilitation of IDPs, the reopening of national highways, and firm safeguards for the state’s territorial integrity.
The rally reflected deep frustration among displaced families who have endured prolonged displacement amid persistent insecurity in parts of Manipur. COCOMI leaders joined the march to amplify demands that have grown louder as the conflict continues to restrict normal life and access to affected areas. The protest highlighted the urgent need for concrete government action to restore normalcy for thousands still living in relief camps.
An 11-member delegation, including five COCOMI members, later met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to present their grievances directly. According to local media accounts, the participants expressed dissatisfaction with the meeting’s outcome, feeling that assurances fell short of addressing their immediate concerns. The discussion focused on the broader challenges faced by IDPs and the slow pace of rehabilitation efforts.

In an official statement from Lok Bhavan, the Governor acknowledged the delegation’s representations and informed them that processes for resettlement and rehabilitation are already in progress. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to enabling the safe and phased return of displaced individuals to their original locations. The statement emphasized ongoing efforts to facilitate this process while maintaining security considerations.
The demonstration underscores the mounting pressure on authorities to resolve the humanitarian crisis stemming from the ethnic clashes. While the government maintains that steps toward resettlement are underway, the protesters’ discontent signals continued distrust and impatience among affected communities. The situation remains tense as demands for tangible progress persist across Manipur’s divided regions.
