Himanshi, a young mother of two daughters, was found hanging from the ceiling of her in-laws’ home in Ghari Sakhvat village, Muzaffarnagar, on Thursday night, sparking allegations of murder. Her father claims she was killed by her in-laws for not giving birth to a son, intensifying scrutiny on gender-based harassment in the region.
Station House Officer Anand Dev Mishra confirmed a case has been filed against Himanshi’s husband, Bhagat Singh, his brother Surat Singh, father Lehri, and mother Shakuntala, following her father’s complaint. Himanshi, married to Bhagat since December 6, 2020, faced persistent harassment over her daughters, her father alleged. Lehri is in custody for questioning, and Himanshi’s body has been sent for a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.
The case echoes a disturbing pattern in Uttar Pradesh, where dowry and gender-related violence have been reported, such as a 2021 incident in Muzaffarnagar where a woman’s suicide was filmed by in-laws to claim innocence. Police are investigating as the community demands justice.
