A tattoo on a woman’s hand helped police identify her after her body was found cut into nine pieces and dumped in a canal in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. The deceased was identified as Kalyani after details of the unidentified body were circulated on social media. Her relatives reportedly recognised the tattoo and approached the police, allowing investigators to establish her identity. The identification subsequently led police to a butcher from Bhavanipuram who allegedly knew Kalyani and is suspected of killing her following a dispute over money.

Police identified the suspect as Shafi, who runs a small mutton shop in Bhavanipuram. According to the investigation, Shafi and Kalyani were closely associated but had reportedly been involved in disputes over money. Police are also examining whether an earlier disagreement involving Kalyani’s son contributed to tensions between the two. Investigators believe the financial dispute may have played a role in the alleged killing, although the exact motive is still being established. Police are questioning Shafi and another man, Guruvulu, who worked at his mutton shop, to determine their respective roles.

According to the investigation, Shafi took Kalyani to his house in Bhavanipuram on September 17. A quarrel allegedly broke out between the two over money, after which Shafi is accused of attacking Kalyani with a knife and slitting her throat. Police suspect she died following the attack. Investigators are examining the circumstances leading up to the confrontation, including the nature of the dispute and whether anyone else was present when the alleged killing took place.

Police suspect that after the alleged killing, Shafi cut Kalyani’s body into nine pieces. With the assistance of Guruvulu, he allegedly transported the remains away from the house. The body parts were subsequently dumped in the Cooling Canal in the Gollapudi area, according to the investigation. The discovery of the remains initially left police without a confirmed identity, but the tattoo helped relatives recognise Kalyani after information about the unidentified body was shared on social media.

Shafi and Guruvulu have been detained and are being questioned by police over their alleged involvement in the case. Investigators are now working to establish the sequence of events, the exact roles of both suspects and how the body was transported and disposed of. Police are also examining evidence that could establish the motive behind the alleged killing and determine whether anyone else was involved. The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against the suspects have not yet been established in court.

The case comes amid another recent murder investigation in Bengaluru in which police alleged that a 32-year-old man from Odisha killed his wife during an argument over finances and kept her body inside their home for several days before dumping it at a vacant plot. Police said Sagar Chandra Rawat was arrested after the decomposed body of his wife, Anusuya, was discovered at a vacant plot in MS Nagar near Sampigehalli. According to police, the couple had argued over finances on August 11 before Sagar allegedly assaulted and strangled her. The two cases are separate, with police continuing investigations into both incidents.
