A 19-year-old woman died after being allegedly stabbed by her father inside a police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district, in an incident that has raised serious concerns about security within police premises and the handling of family disputes involving inter-caste or love marriages. The victim, Shivani, had reportedly married a neighbour and was brought to the station along with her husband for questioning following a complaint filed by her family.
According to police officials, Shivani had left her home on May 18 with Lalit Verma, after which the couple got married at a temple and later registered their marriage legally. Her parents subsequently lodged a complaint against Verma, prompting police to initiate a search operation. Acting on information, authorities traced the couple to Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district and brought them back to Banda for further inquiry.
At the police station, the couple reportedly informed officials that they had married of their own free will and submitted supporting documents related to their marriage. While preparations were underway for a medical examination and formal recording of Shivani’s statement, both families arrived at the station, leading to a counselling session aimed at resolving the dispute.

Tensions escalated during the counselling process when Shivani’s parents allegedly continued to pressure her to return home, while she refused and insisted on staying with her husband. Police personnel were present during the exchange, but the situation turned violent when Shivani’s mother allegedly restrained her and her father attacked her with a knife inside the premises.
The victim sustained severe injuries to her abdomen, arm and palm and was immediately rushed for medical treatment. However, she succumbed to her injuries during treatment, according to officials. The incident has prompted an internal review of security protocols at the police station where the attack took place.
Banda Superintendent of Police Palash Bansal confirmed that a case has been registered and the accused father has been arrested. Further investigation is underway to determine how the attack occurred inside the police station and whether any lapses contributed to the fatal incident. Authorities have stated that strict action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
