A 24-year-old man from Ludhiana, Sunil Kumar, tragically ended his life last week, sparking a heated controversy after his ex-wife, now residing in the United Kingdom, released a video alleging dowry harassment and psychological pressure. Kirandeep Kaur claimed that her former in-laws made unreasonable financial demands and that Kumar often threatened self-harm due to the ongoing disputes.
Following the video, Ludhiana police have booked Kaur, her parents, and her current husband, Gurpreet Singh, on charges including abetment of suicide, fraud, and conspiracy. Kumar’s parents allege that the ex-wife’s sudden withdrawal of communication after moving abroad exacerbated his mental health struggles, ultimately leading to his death.
According to village sarpanch Sukhwinder Singh, the couple initially married in June 2019, and Kumar had sold property worth Rs 11 lakh to finance Kaur’s relocation to the UK. Singh alleged that Kaur’s family misled Kumar into signing divorce papers under promises of assistance with his travel, with the divorce finalized in September 2024. Kaur reportedly married Gurpreet Singh the following month.

Kumar’s mother stated that her son even attended Kaur’s second wedding as a witness, believing it was part of visa formalities and expecting to reunite later in the UK. The family claims that after her departure from India, Kaur became unresponsive, further isolating Kumar and contributing to his deteriorating mental state.
In her video, Kaur countered these allegations, insisting she was pressured into moving abroad and that dowry-related disputes had begun soon after their marriage. She also challenged the reported 2019 wedding date, asserting that they married in 2021, highlighting inconsistencies in the family’s narrative.
The police investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining the claims from both sides and the circumstances that led to Kumar’s death. The case has drawn widespread attention, igniting debates on dowry harassment, mental health, and accountability in cross-border marital disputes.
