A food-related dispute at a restaurant in Mumbai’s Borivali area has developed into an alleged extortion case, after police booked two sisters following a complaint from the eatery’s owner. The matter began on September 24 when a customer and relatives reportedly claimed that a rat had been found in a dosa served at the restaurant. The incident later drew attention after footage of the alleged discovery circulated on social media.
The controversy led to regulatory action, with the Food and Drug Administration suspending the restaurant’s licence on September 28. According to the restaurant owner’s complaint, the sisters subsequently contacted him and demanded Rs 25 lakh, allegedly linking the payment to the matter and possible legal action. Police are examining the claims made by the owner as part of the investigation.
Police said the alleged demand was later reduced during negotiations to Rs 7 lakh. The owner reportedly paid Rs 1 lakh, while the sisters allegedly continued seeking the remaining amount. The complainant then approached Borivali Police, leading to the registration of an FIR on October 5 under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to extortion and common intention.

According to the police account, the women were expected to collect the remaining Rs 6 lakh after the initial payment. Officers arranged a meeting as part of their investigation and subsequently served notices to the two sisters. Police have not treated the allegations as established facts, and the circumstances surrounding the monetary demand are being investigated.
The original food-safety complaint is also under scrutiny as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged discovery of the rat. The FDA had already taken action against the restaurant following the incident and the circulation of the footage. The case has therefore expanded from a food complaint into a wider investigation involving the restaurant owner, the complainants and the alleged financial demand.
Police are continuing to verify the statements and evidence connected with the case. The investigation is expected to establish what happened at the restaurant, how the alleged monetary demand was made and whether the claims surrounding the original food complaint can be substantiated. Further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing probe.
