In a bizarre attempt to ridicule Bihar’s administrative system, an unidentified prankster submitted an online residence certificate application in the name of U.S. President Donald Trump on July 29, falsely claiming he resides in Hasanpur village, Ward No. 13, Mohiuddinnagar block, Samastipur district.
The application, registered under BRCCO/2025/17989735, included Trump’s photo and listed his parents as Frederick Christ Trump and Mary Anne MacLeod, but was swiftly rejected on August 4 after officials detected tampered details, including a fake Aadhaar number and barcode. The Samastipur administration has lodged an FIR at the Cyber police station, with investigators now tracing the IP address and login credentials used in the prank.
This incident marks the fourth in a series of fraudulent residence certificate applications in Bihar since June, amid the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, aimed at updating voter records. Previous cases included applications in Patna and Nawada under names like ‘Dog Babu’ and ‘Dogesh Babu,’ featuring canine photos, and one in East Champaran for ‘Sonalika Tractor’ with a Bhojpuri actress’s image. All were rejected, with FIRs filed under the IT Act. Authorities suspect these pranks are deliberate attempts to undermine the SIR process, with Mohiuddinnagar Circle Officer Srishti Sagar stating, “This was done to mock and defame the system.”
The issue gained political traction when Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala shared a misleading news clip claiming a certificate was issued, alleging the SIR is a “fraud aimed at stealing votes.” The Samastipur administration clarified, “No certificate was issued. The application was rejected, and an FIR lodged. The guilty will not be spared.” The controversy has exposed vulnerabilities in Bihar’s RTPS (Right to Public Service) portal, prompting calls for technical audits and stricter KYC verification to curb identity fraud.
As Bihar approaches election season, these incidents highlight the urgent need for robust digital governance to protect electoral integrity.
