In a dramatic rescue operation at New Jalpaiguri station in Siliguri, West Bengal, 56 young women were saved from a potential human trafficking scheme on Monday night, July 21, 2025. The women, aged 18 to 31 and hailing from Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar districts, were found aboard the New Jalpaiguri-Patna Capital Express. They had been lured with false promises of jobs at a Bengaluru-based company but were instead being transported to Bihar, officials reported.
Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel grew suspicious during a routine train inspection, noting the large group of women traveling together without valid tickets—only coach and berth numbers were marked on their hands. Questioning revealed inconsistencies in their story, leading to the arrest of a man and a woman accompanying them. The duo provided contradictory statements and failed to produce any documentation to justify the travel or confirm the alleged job offers.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) and RPF have launched a joint investigation, with a focus on uncovering a possible human trafficking network. The rescued women have been safely reunited with their families. Authorities are working to dismantle the operation behind this deceptive scheme, which exploited the victims’ hopes for employment.
