A two-year-old boy was pulled out dead from a borewell in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district following a prolonged 22-hour rescue operation, officials confirmed on Friday. The child, identified as Bhagirath Dewasi, had fallen into the deep borewell on Thursday evening, triggering an intensive rescue effort involving multiple agencies. Despite continuous attempts, the toddler could not be saved, and his body was eventually recovered.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 7:30 pm in Jhalaria village under Badnagar tehsil, where the child reportedly slipped into a 200-foot-deep borewell. Rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were immediately deployed, and efforts were launched to locate and retrieve the child from the narrow shaft.
Officials said the boy was located at a depth of approximately 75 feet inside the borewell, which contained water. Rescue personnel used iron rods, ropes, and specialised borewell equipment in an attempt to safely extract him. However, the operation was hampered by challenging conditions, including the narrow structure of the borewell and the presence of water, which complicated rescue efforts.

Attempts to dig a parallel tunnel to reach the child were unsuccessful due to the rocky terrain in the area. Rescuers also tried to secure the child using a rescue ring, but these efforts did not yield results. After hours of continuous work, the team was finally able to retrieve the child’s body, bringing the operation to a tragic end.
Medical officials confirmed that Bhagirath Dewasi had died within a few hours of the fall. Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Ashok Patel stated that the post-mortem examination determined drowning as the cause of death. The body was later transported to a government hospital in Badnagar for further formalities.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the incident and announced a financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for the bereaved family. Police officials, including Superintendent Pradeep Mishra, stated that an investigation would be conducted to determine any negligence that may have led to the tragedy, with assurances of strict action against those found responsible.
