A 38-year-old Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, Rajjak Khan, was brutally murdered in Bhangar, South 24 Parganas, on Thursday night, intensifying tensions in the area. Khan, the Chaltaberia unit president and close aide of TMC’s Canning Purba MLA Saokat Molla, was ambushed near Siristala while returning from party meetings. Assailants shot him three times and stabbed him multiple times, ensuring his death, police said. He was declared dead at a hospital.
No arrests have been made, but Kolkata Police are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting an autopsy. A team has been deployed to maintain order in the volatile Bhangar area, known for TMC-ISF clashes. Molla accused the Indian Secular Front (ISF) of orchestrating the killing, alleging ISF-backed criminals targeted Khan due to their waning influence. “This is an assault on democracy,” Molla said, demanding swift arrests. ISF MLA Nawsad Siddique denied the claims, attributing the murder to TMC’s internal feuds.
The attack, occurring around 9:45 PM, has fueled fears of escalating political violence in Bhangar, a hotspot for TMC-ISF rivalry. Police are probing the motive, with political tensions high ahead of local power struggles.
